Day 9: The ALCAN
Motorcycling travelers trade tales of tarmac terror on the ALCAN (Alaska-Canadian Highway), road conditions turn out to be much better than expected.
Day 8: The kindness of strangers
You know the old adage: “There’s no such thing as a free lunch?” Outside of Haines, Alaska, it turns out a group of cold cut comrades are just being nice.
Day 7: Adieu, Albertans!
The further north I go in Alaska, the longer daylight lasts. There’s no discernible difference between night and day, which makes it tough to stop exploring.
Day 6: Whitehorse
A former gold rush outpost situated on the west bank of the Yukon River, Whitehorse is one of two towns overland travelers must pass through to access central Alaska.
Day 5: 15 hours in the saddle
Proving the adage “There’s too much of a good thing,” a long day in the saddle ends in the first bike drop of my trip motorcycling across Canada.
Day 4: Meet the Albertans
Service stations on desolate backroads are the only place to stop, stretch and refuel both bike and rider. Camaraderie comes quick on a motorcycle tour through the Great White North.
Day 3: Never pass gas!
The first Rule of the Road is: Never pass gas! Ignoring this and your motorcycle trip may not go well.
Day 2: I thought this was a motorcycle adventure?
The cruise through the Inside Passage takes about 17 hours. Beautiful as it is, by the 13th hour you start going stir crazy and just want off the boat!

Redmond, WA >> Nanaimo, BC (via Horseshoe Bay ferry) >> Port Hardy, BC 400 miles ridden/10 hours (+2.5-hour ferry crossing) I had just gotten off the ferry in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island and was en route to Port Hardy when the bike ran out of gas. Admittedly, I have a need for speed. So I… Continue reading Day 1: An auspicious start
